Peter Obi Criticizes Alleged Expensive Car Gifts to State Coordinators by the Federal Government

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has spoken out against reports that expensive vehicles were handed out to state coordinators of a political group said to be connected to the Federal Government.

In a post shared on his 𝕏 account on Thursday, Obi called the move a “profound insensitivity” to the daily struggles of Nigerians.

The reports claim that President Bola Tinubu gave out Toyota Land Cruisers, Hilux trucks, and Hummer buses to members of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a group believed to be preparing for the 2027 elections. Obi said this kind of action shows that the government is not focused on what really matters.

“At a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, the decision of any government to allocate limited public resources for distributing luxury vehicles… is not only insensitive but also represents a serious moral failure,” Obi stated.

He criticized the use of public funds for what he described as political display, especially when many citizens are living in poverty.

“While ordinary Nigerians are grappling with poverty and hopelessness, those in leadership positions continue to flaunt their wealth by driving brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers,” he said.

Obi said this kind of behavior turns the suffering of the people into a backdrop for political drama.

“This is not governance. It reflects a profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy,” he added.

He also said that what Nigerians truly need is not convoys of flashy cars but real solutions to hunger, joblessness, and insecurity.

“Leadership, especially in these challenging times, should focus on providing food for the hungry, ensuring access to healthcare for the sick, restoring hope for millions of unemployed youth, and securing our communities. It should not be about parading luxury vehicles or campaigning for votes,” he said.

Obi, who once served as governor of Anambra State, pointed out that many families are struggling with school fees, poor healthcare, and safety concerns. He said the reported car distribution shows a “tragic misplacement of priorities.”
