A passenger ferry carrying more than 350 people sank near the Sulu Islands in the southern Philippines, prompting a large scale search and rescue operation by maritime authorities. The incident occurred as the vessel was traveling between islands in the Sulu Sea, an area known for challenging weather and sea conditions.

Philippine Coast Guard officials said emergency teams were immediately deployed after receiving distress signals from the ferry. Rescue vessels and aircraft were dispatched to the scene to search for survivors, while nearby fishing boats and commercial ships were asked to assist in the operation.

Authorities said many passengers were able to jump into the water wearing life jackets, but concerns remain about those who may be trapped inside the vessel or missing at sea. Initial reports indicated that rough waters and limited visibility were complicating rescue efforts.

The cause of the sinking has not yet been confirmed, though investigators are examining possible factors including weather conditions, vessel condition and passenger load. Officials said a full inquiry would be launched once rescue operations are completed.

The Philippines experiences frequent maritime accidents due to its vast archipelago and heavy reliance on sea transport. The latest incident has renewed calls for stricter safety enforcement and improved emergency preparedness for passenger vessels.
