“Many of you seated here, especially His Excellency the Vice President, would not be where you are today if not for the statesmanship displayed by Dr Goodluck Jonathan,” the Ooni declared. “When he lost the election, he picked up the phone and called his opponent to congratulate him even before INEC officially announced the results. That singular act saved Nigeria from sliding into chaos.”

The audience, which included top government officials, business leaders, and diplomats, responded with applause. The Ooni used the moment to highlight how rare such gestures are in African politics, noting that Jonathan’s concession on March 31, 2015, remains a global example of peaceful democratic transition.

He praised Jonathan for putting the country first during a time of deep national division, saying, “That phone call prevented what could have been a major crisis.”
