Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a weekly day off duty and a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants in Ogun State as part of measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs.

The initiative, which takes effect from April 2026 and will run for an initial period of three months, is aimed at easing transportation challenges faced by workers following the recent increase in fuel prices.

Announcing the development, the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, explained that eligible workers will enjoy one day off each week in addition to receiving the transport allowance. He noted that the policy is designed to improve staff welfare, boost morale and enhance productivity across the public service.

However, Onasanya clarified that certain categories of workers will be exempt from the weekly day off arrangement due to the essential nature of their responsibilities. These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teachers, security personnel, accounting officers and heads of departments, among others. Despite the exemption, affected workers will still receive the ₦10,000 monthly transport support.

He further stated that Accounting Officers across Ministries, Departments and Agencies will determine suitable days off for eligible staff in a way that does not disrupt government operations.

Describing the move as timely and compassionate, Onasanya commended the governor for prioritising workers welfare amid economic pressures. He also urged public servants to respond with greater commitment, discipline and improved service delivery.

The measure reflects the state government’s effort to balance employee support with operational efficiency during a period of rising living costs.
