An off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer fatally shot a man on Friday night in Staten Island after the individual pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the officer. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. near the rear of a local diner, prompting a 911 call reporting a man with a gun.

Upon arriving at the scene, the off-duty officer, accompanied by a colleague, observed the man holding what appeared to be a firearm. Following the shooting, the officers administered life-saving measures before transporting the man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An imitation firearm was recovered at the scene. The NYPD is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Authorities have confirmed that the man had a prior criminal history, though specific details have not been disclosed.

Assistant Chief Melissa Eger of the NYPD Patrol Borough of Staten Island stated, “Our officers were confronted with a dangerous and unpredictable situation, and they attempted to de-escalate the situation multiple times.” The department is committed to a comprehensive review to ensure transparency and accountability.

This incident underscores the challenges law enforcement officers face when confronted with situations involving imitation firearms. The NYPD continues to emphasize the importance of de-escalation tactics and the need for officers to make split-second decisions in high-pressure environments.

As the investigation progresses, the NYPD urges the public to await official findings before drawing conclusions. The department remains dedicated to upholding public safety and maintaining trust within the communities it serves.
