Oborevwori Mourns Passing of Bishop Emeritus Afareha, Describes Him as Pillar of Faith and Service

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Most Rev. John Okeoghene Afareha, who passed away at the age of 78.

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, and released in Asaba, the governor described the late cleric as a revered servant of God whose life was marked by faith, humility, and unwavering dedication to humanity. He noted that Bishop Afareha’s passing represents a profound loss to the Catholic Church, Delta State, and society at large.

Governor Oborevwori said the bishop’s years of priestly and episcopal service were distinguished by spiritual discipline, pastoral simplicity, and a strong commitment to the growth and consolidation of the Catholic faith, particularly within the Warri Diocese.

“The passing of Bishop Afareha is a great loss not only to the Catholic Church but to Delta State and humanity at large,” the governor said. “He was a father, shepherd, and man of deep prayer whose life exemplified service, sacrifice, and obence to the will of God.”

The governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Bishop of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, as well as the clergy, religious, and faithful of the diocese. He also sympathized with the family of the late bishop, praying that God grants them strength, comfort, and fortitude to bear the loss.

Oborevwori further prayed for the peaceful repose of Bishop Afareha’s soul, asking God to grant him eternal rest and reward him abundantly for a lifetime devoted to the service of the Church and mankind.

Bishop Afareha was ordained a Catholic priest on December 30, 1973, and later consecrated as bishop on May 14, 1997. He served the Church with distinction and remained a symbol of humility, dedication, and spiritual leadership until his passing.
