The national leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has described the exit of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, as the end of an era and a major turning point in the party’s political journey.
This position was contained in a statement signed by the party’s National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, and made available to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State. According to the NNPP, Governor Yusuf’s resignation was accepted “in good faith,” marking the conclusion of a political phase largely associated with the influence of the party’s former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The party disclosed that Governor Yusuf cited prolonged internal wrangling and leadership disputes as the primary reasons for his decision to leave. These challenges, the NNPP noted, significantly weakened internal cohesion and coordination, particularly in Kano State, where factional disagreements had persisted.
Speaking on behalf of the national leadership, the party chairman, Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major, acknowledged that the internal crises posed serious threats to unity and effective party organization. He described Yusuf’s departure as the close of a difficult chapter while urging party members across the country to remain calm, resilient, and focused on rebuilding.
“The resignation of Governor Abba Yusuf marks the conclusion of a difficult chapter in the life of our party. We wish him well in his future political endeavours,” the statement said, while calling on members to stay committed to the vision of building a strong platform for national development.
While expressing regret over the circumstances that led to the governor’s exit, the NNPP maintained that the conflicts were avoidable. The party was critical of Senator Kwankwaso’s political group but emphasized its resolve to move forward without distractions.
Reaffirming faith in its founding leadership, the NNPP highlighted its over 25-year history and paid tribute to its founder, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, for laying a solid foundation and vision for national renewal.
Despite setbacks in Kano, the party expressed optimism, pledging to strengthen its structures nationwide and remain politically relevant beyond 2027.
