The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to celebrate Christmas and Boxing Day, with Thursday, January 1, 2026, designated as a public holiday for New Year’s Day. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and communicated through the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
In his statement, the minister extended warm greetings to Christians in Nigeria and worldwide, highlighting that the festive season is a time to reflect on the virtues of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. He encouraged all Nigerians, regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds, to pray for national peace, security, and progress during this period, supporting government efforts for development and cohesion.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo underscored the importance of using this season to strengthen unity, show compassion, and renew a commitment to nation-building. He urged citizens to be law-abiding, vigilant, and moderate in their celebrations, cooperating with security agencies to ensure a peaceful holiday period.
