Netflix has secured exclusive global rights to adapt the iconic board game Catan into various film and television projects, including live-action and animated formats, as well as both scripted and unscripted content. This collaboration with Asmodee Entertainment and Catan Studio significantly expands Netflix’s portfolio of game-to-screen adaptations.

Originally released in 1995 as “The Settlers of Catan,” the game has sold over 45 million copies worldwide and is available in more than 40 languages. Players navigate a fictional island to trade, build, and settle, which has created a dedicated global fanbase thanks to its strategic depth and engaging gameplay.

The project will be produced by key figures including Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio, and the Teuber brothers, sons of the late game creator Klaus Teuber. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment will also be involved, striving to capture the richness of Catan’s universe while highlighting themes of strategy, resource management, and human connection.

Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler expressed excitement about the partnership, noting Catan’s role as a gateway to modern board gaming and its significance in pop culture. Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, emphasized Catan’s strategic elements as a foundation for compelling storytelling, promising to engage both longtime fans and newcomers.

The Teuber brothers, reflecting on their father’s vision, see this collaboration as a chance to inspire global storytelling while maintaining the core principles of creativity and connection that Catan embos. This initiative aligns with Netflix’s growing range of game-based content, which includes successful adaptations like “Arcane” and “Castlevania,” positioning the Catan adaptation as an exciting new offering.
