Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a ninety three year old man and a sixty nine year old medical doctor among several suspects during coordinated nationwide operations targeting drug trafficking networks.
According to the Director of Media and Advocacy Femi Babafemi, the operations were intelligence driven and carried out across multiple states as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug cartels and reduce substance abuse across the country.
In one of the operations, the elderly suspect identified as Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu was arrested at his residence in Abia State where officers recovered seven point seven kilograms of skunk. He was said to have admitted long term involvement with cannabis related substances during questioning.
In another operation, an Ivorian national was intercepted at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with one point forty nine kilograms of . Follow up investigations led operatives to Ogun State where a sixty nine year old doctor was arrested and additional drugs were recovered.
Further arrests were made across several states including Ogun, Imo, Niger, Borno, Lagos, Abuja, and Edo where large quantities of cannabis, codeine syrup, and other controlled substances were seized. In Niger State, a couple was found with one hundred and eighteen kilograms of skunk in their residence while in Edo State two trucks loaded with over seven thousand kilograms of cannabis were intercepted.
The agency confirmed that multiple suspects have been taken into custody as investigations continue into the wider network behind the distribution channels. The agency also noted that its War Against Drug Abuse campaign continues in schools and communities nationwide to reduce drug demand.
Chairman of the agency Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers for their professionalism and urged continued vigilance in tackling drug related crimes across the country.
