The Nigerian Air Force has approved a welfare initiative that will allow the families of personnel who in the line of duty to continue receiving their salaries for up to 12 months after their death.

The policy was approved by the Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Aneke as part of efforts to strengthen welfare support for the families of fallen heroes.

A credible source within the Nigerian Air Force disclosed the development on Sunday in Abuja. According to the source the initiative is designed to reduce the financial burden often faced by families of personnel who lose their lives while serving the nation.

Under existing public service rules salary payments to government employees typically stop immediately after the death of the staff member. However the new policy introduces a special extension that allows salaries to continue for up to 12 months from the date of death or until all death benefits have been fully processed and paid whichever comes first.

The official explained that the measure will help cushion the financial impact on spouses or next of kin while administrative procedures for processing death benefits are ongoing.

The source also revealed that the Chief of the Air Staff has approved additional welfare packages for officers airmen and airwomen across the service.

According to him the new welfare measures are designed to ease the economic pressures currently facing military personnel and to reinforce the Air Force commitment to the wellbeing of its members and their families.

He added that improved welfare is critical to maintaining a motivated and mission ready force stressing that the wellbeing of personnel is closely linked to operational effectiveness.

The initiatives he said demonstrate the Nigerian Air Force determination to honour the sacrifices of fallen personnel while standing firmly behind the families they leave behind.
