Major Setback for Terror Networks in North West Nigeria: The Fall of Aminu Kanawa and Key Associates

In a significant blow to terrorism in Nigeria’s North West region, troops from Operation Fasan Yamma have dealt a decisive strike against the forces of notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji. Between January 20-21, 2025, the military operation led to the neutralization of Aminu Kanawa, the second-in-command to Turji, as confirmed by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The operation not only neutralized Kanawa but also inflicted severe casualties among Turji’s inner circle, including his younger brother Dosso, and close ally Danbokolo. Furthermore, several key commanders under Turji’s command were taken out: Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon-Saniya-Yafi-Bahaushe. Over 24 terrorists attempting to flee from Turji’s camp in Gebe and Isa LGA of Sokoto State, as well as around Gidan Rijiya in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State, were also neutralized.

In an additional operation around Fakai high ground, another significant figure, Suleiman, a loyalist to the late terrorist leader Halilu Sububu, was eliminated while leading a reinforcement team to aid Turji’s beleaguered camp. This series of actions represents a considerable disruption to the command structure and operational capabilities of the terrorist groups in the region.

These terrorists were known for their brutal kidnappings and attacks, particularly affecting the Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas in Zamfara and Sokoto States. The dismantling of this network’s leadership is seen as a critical step towards restoring peace and security in these troubled areas.

Major General Buba emphasized the ongoing commitment of the troops, stating, “Overall, troops are not relenting until these terrorists are destroyed. Troops operations are aimed at creating an atmosphere of safety and security for all citizens.” This statement underscores the military’s resolve to continue their offensive until the region is free from the grip of terrorism.

The successful operations have been met with commendations, particularly from local leaders in Shinkafi, who see this as a turning point in their long fight against insecurity. However, the military’s achievements also highlight the persistent need for vigilance, community cooperation, and further strategic actions to ensure lasting peace in North West Nigeria. The community’s hope is now pinned on these developments leading to a safer environment where fear does not dictate daily life.
