M23 Rebels Seize Key Town in Eastern Congo as Violence Intensifies

The ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has escalated with the M23 rebel group capturing the strategic town of Uvira, following a recent U.S.-brokered peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda. Uvira, situated on Lake Tanganyika near the Burundian border, had been the temporary headquarters for the DRC’s administration in South Kivu province after M23’s takeover of Bukavu in February 2025.

The capture has heightened fears of regional deilization, with many residents fleeing the town amidst gunfire, leading to a significant refugee crisis as nearly 25,000 individuals crossed into Burundi between December 5 and 8. The United Nations has condemned the violence, urging an immediate ceasefire and adherence to international humanitarian law.

The DRC government accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels, a claim that Rwanda denies while acknowledging its military presence in eastern Congo for security reasons. The exclusion of M23 from recent peace negotiations is seen as a major barrier to achieving lasting peace in the region.
