The Lagos State Taskforce has intensified its enforcement against illegal commercial motorcycle, popularly known as okada, operations, impounding 134 motorcycles during coordinated clampdown exercises carried out across major parts of the state.
The enforcement, conducted in two phases early in the day, was aimed at curbing traffic violations, restoring sanity on major highways, and addressing security concerns associated with unlawful motorcycle operations. The agency said the move reflects the state government’s renewed determination to enforce traffic laws and ensure public safety.
According to the Director of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the second phase of the operation followed an earlier morning exercise, underscoring the taskforce’s resolve to sustain pressure on defaulters until full compliance is achieved.
He explained that the coordinated operations covered several strategic locations across the state, including Obalende, Falomo Underbridge, Coastal Road, CMS Roundabout on Lagos Island, as well as 2nd Rainbow, Mile 2 Bridge, Five Star, Ladipo Bus Stop, and Cele Bus Stop along the busy Oshodi–Apapa Expressway.
Abdulraheem noted that many of the apprehended operators were found plying restricted routes, obstructing traffic flow, and causing undue congestion on major roads. Some were also said to be operating in manners that posed serious risks to commuters and other road users.
“The exercise was necessary to restore order and prevent the chaos often caused by illegal commercial motorcycle activities on major highways,” he said.
The taskforce confirmed that a total of 134 motorcycles were impounded during the operation and that normal traffic flow was restored across all affected areas shortly after the exercise.
Reaffirming its stance, the Lagos State Taskforce stated that enforcement activities would be sustained across the state to ensure strict adherence to traffic regulations. The agency urged commercial motorcycle operators to comply with existing laws and avoid restricted routes to prevent further sanctions.
