The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has explained the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a school building housing Yemco Nursery Primary and Comprehensive College located at 11 Adu Street behind County Hospital in Aguda Ogba area of Lagos.

According to the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli Balogun, the incident occurred at about noon on Monday when a four storey building within the school premises suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, students and staff had already been safely evacuated from the building moments before the structure caved in.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the commissioner explained that the evacuation process was carried out swiftly after concerns were raised about the safety of the building. Reports indicate that the structure collapsed less than three minutes after learners and staff were moved out of the premises, preventing what could have been a major tragedy.

Officials who arrived at the scene observed that the collapsed building along with an adjoining residential structure had already been sealed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency as part of emergency safety measures. Two officers of the agency were stationed at the location to secure the premises and prevent unauthorized access.

The commissioner confirmed that no casualties or injuries were recorded because the evacuation took place on time. However, officials noted that no school staff members were present at the site during the initial inspection to provide additional information, and immediate operational contacts were not available.

The ministry also confirmed that the school is a recognized institution under the Office of Education Quality Assurance. Relevant government agencies including LASBCA and other safety authorities have begun technical assessments to determine the exact cause of the building collapse.

The Lagos State Government reassured parents and guardians that the safety of learners remains its highest priority. Authorities have secured the affected premises to prevent further risk while investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the Office of Education Quality Assurance is working with the school management to ensure that students do not lose valuable learning time. Plans are underway to introduce temporary virtual learning and identify a safe relocation site where academic activities can continue while the situation is resolved.
