Kenya Seeks Indian Credit Line to Boost Defence Capabilities

Share
Share

Kenya has formally requested a line of credit from India to support the acquisition of defence equipment including helicopters and artillery systems. The move reflects Nairobi’s efforts to modernize its military capabilities while strengthening strategic and defence cooperation with New Delhi.

Officials familiar with the discussions said the proposed credit facility would allow Kenya to procure Indian made defence platforms and services under favorable financing terms. The focus is on enhancing air mobility and ground firepower as Kenya addresses regional security challenges and peacekeeping commitments.

India has increasingly positioned itself as a defence supplier to partner countries in Africa, offering cost effective equipment along with training and maintenance support. The request from Kenya aligns with India’s broader push to expand defence exports and deepen security ties across the continent.

The talks also come as both countries seek to diversify their strategic partnerships amid shifting global alliances. Any agreement on the credit line would mark a significant step in bilateral defence relations and could pave the way for future cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism and maritime security.
