FC Barcelona has appointed Javi Rodríguez as the new head coach of its futsal team, signing him to a contract through June 2027. Rodríguez, a legendary figure in the club’s futsal history, returns to the Palau Blaugrana after a successful stint in Hungary, where he led Veszprém to their first-ever league title.

At 51, Rodríguez succeeds Tino Pérez, who was dismissed following a trophyless season—the first since 2016-2017. Known as “El Mito,” Rodríguez captained Barcelona from 2006 to 2012, securing two league titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and the inaugural UEFA Futsal Champions League in 2012. His leadership was instrumental in establishing the club’s dominance in European futsal.

After retiring in 2014, Rodríguez embarked on a coaching career that took him to Hungary, Italy, Ukraine, and Kuwait. In Hungary, he achieved significant success with Gyori ETO, including a historic Champions League Final Four appearance and a league title. His international experience also includes coaching stints in Italy and Ukraine, where he secured national championships. In Spain, he managed Industrias Santa Coloma and ElPozo Murcia Costa Cálida, further honing his coaching credentials.

Rodríguez’s return to Barcelona marks a new chapter for the futsal team, aiming to restore its competitive edge and reclaim its position at the top of European futsal. His appointment is part of a broader restructuring within the club, which has seen the departure of key players like Sergio Lozano and Dyego, and the addition of new talents such as Neguinho, Luciano Gauna, and Pol Pacheco. These strategic moves reflect the club’s commitment to returning to its winning ways and achieving success in upcoming competitions.

The club’s president, Joan Laporta, has expressed strong support for Rodríguez’s appointment, emphasizing the coach’s deep understanding of the club’s culture and his proven track record in developing successful teams. Laporta’s confidence in Rodríguez underscores the belief that his leadership will be pivotal in guiding Barcelona back to the pinnacle of futsal excellence.

As Rodríguez takes the helm, the Barcelona futsal team is poised for a period of revitalization, with a renewed focus on defensive solidity, strategic play, and a commitment to the club’s esteemed traditions. Fans and stakeholders eagerly anticipate the positive impact of Rodríguez’s leadership on the team’s performance in the forthcoming seasons.
