Bihar is currently experiencing a severe cold wave, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for 12 districts due to extremely dense fog and harsh cold conditions. A yellow alert has been issued for 24 additional districts, including Patna, warning residents of cold-day conditions.

The districts affected by the red alert are West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Vaishali, Saran, Siwan, and Gopalganj. These areas are expected to experience extremely dense fog at night and during the morning, posing significant risks for road travel. The cold spell is predicted to last until December 22, with temperatures potentially dropping further.

In Patna, temperatures have decreased by nearly six degrees Celsius in 24 hours, with highs of 16.9°C and lows of 14.0°C, resulting in a minimal diurnal variation that prolongs the cold. Similar changes have been reported in districts like Gaya, Chhapra, and Jehanabad. The IMD has warned of particularly dense fog on December 20 and advised caution to residents.

Poor visibility caused by the fog has led to numerous road accidents, with fatalities and injuries reported. A tragic collision in Araria district resulted in the deaths of two youths and left one injured. Schools across several districts have either closed or adjusted their timings in response to the cold conditions.

Authorities are urging residents to remain indoors during peak fog hours and exercise caution when traveling. The IMD has further warned that cold wave conditions may worsen, advising necessary precautions to ensure the safety and health of the public.
