The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Wisdom Onyeaju, in connection with the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl in Owerri West Local Government Area.

The arrest follows public outrage after a video circulated on social media showing a woman claiming that her younger sister was raped by a man who forced his way into their apartment. The video also alleged that police officers demanded N100,000 from the victim’s family before taking a statement.

Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed that the suspect, Onyeaju, a resident of Umuekweye, Irete, is currently in custody and undergoing investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. He will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

Okoye also stated that the officers implicated in the extortion allegations, identified as Inspector Charles Abaneke and Inspector Aweleka Cordelia, have been scheduled for disciplinary action. An orderly room trial will commence on Monday, January 12, 2026, to address the alleged misconduct in accordance with police regulations.

“The Imo State Police Command reiterates its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability, assuring the public that justice will be served in this matter,” Okoye said.

The police emphasized that credible information from the victim’s family, combined with the viral video, prompted swift action, underscoring the command’s focus on protecting vulnerable citizens and addressing allegations of corruption within its ranks.

This development highlights both the responsiveness of the Imo State Police to social media advocacy and the ongoing challenges of ensuring integrity among law enforcement personnel.

  • Is it fair to discipline officers over extortion claims when they are supposed to be protecting and serving? Discuss.

  • I cant believe the police are being disciplined for extortion when they should be focusing on preventing crimes like defilement. Priorities, people!

  • Why are police officers still engaging in extortion when they should be protecting citizens? Its unacceptable! #EndPoliceCorruption
