The Movement for Credible Elections has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Ojo Amupitan, citing allegations of partisanship and a growing credibility crisis ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Media Coordinator, James Ezema, the group urged Amupitan to step aside to allow for an independent and transparent investigation into the claims. The MCE warned that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system must not be compromised at such a critical stage in the country’s democratic journey.

The group boasts prominent members, including Usman Bugaje, Femi Falana, Oby Ezekwesili, Ayuba Wabba, Pat Utomi, Bilikisu Magoro and Nkoyo Toyo, among others.

According to the statement, recent allegations involving digital footprints linked to the INEC chairman and purported partisan expressions favoring the All Progressives Congress have triggered widespread concern. Although Amupitan has denied the accusations, the group insisted that such denials are insufficient in an era where digital forensics can verify claims.

The MCE called on the Federal Government to elish an independent panel comprising judicial officers, digital forensic experts and civil society representatives to investigate the matter thoroughly. It also warned against any attempt to intimidate citizens who raise concerns, describing such actions as harmful to democracy.

Beyond the immediate controversy, the group expressed worries about what it described as a pattern of decisions by INEC that may undermine opposition participation. It cautioned that such developments could erode public trust and push Nigeria toward a one party dominance.

The group further noted that unresolved disputes could escalate beyond national borders, potentially reaching regional bos like the ECOWAS Court of Justice, thereby exposing Nigeria to reputational risks.

Reiterating its position, the MCE stressed that stepping aside remains the most honorable course for the INEC chairman, emphasizing that the credibility of the electoral body is central to national ility and democratic legitimacy.
