The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants in the state. This decision, which also includes measures to address long-standing gratuity arrears, follows the recommendations of an implementation committee made up of representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joint Union Negotiating Council, and the state government.

Governor Uzodinma highlighted that civil servants already on consolidated salaries with a minimum wage of ₦70,000 will receive an additional 10 percent increase. He also announced a phased approach to settling outstanding gratuities. Effective November 26, 2024, gratuity payments will resume for 2,962 retirees at the Local Government level and 2,742 retirees at the State level. Remaining payments, including 1,567 Local Government retirees and 2,685 State retirees, will be completed in subsequent batches.

Speaking about the decision, Uzodinma said, “All the unions operating in the State had agreed on the minimum wage, and in addition, that those on consolidated salaries who are already on ₦70,000 minimum wage will get additional 10 percent on top of their salaries.”
