Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has pushed back against recent media claims painting the state as unsafe, calling such reports exaggerated and driven by political motives.
Speaking at an Amateur Golf Championship held in Port Harcourt, the governor pointed to the large turnout of athletes and guests from across Africa as proof that the state remains peaceful and welcoming.
He acknowledged that Rivers had faced political unrest for about six months but emphasized that calm has since returned. “I can tell you the truth: more than half of the things you read in the media are not true. Worse things have happened in other states, but because they manage their media, people don’t read about them. But in our case, just to run us down and make us look like the devil with invisible horns, they say anything to portray us in a bad light,” he said.
He continued, “Our mission is simple. To change our story, protect our state, and remind everyone that Rivers State is ours and it is safe.”
Fubara praised the efforts of security agencies for their role in restoring order, which he said has allowed his administration to get back on track with its development plans.
He also used the occasion to reaffirm his support for sports, revealing plans to bring back the Governor’s Cup and invest in upgrading the golf club’s facilities. These efforts, he said, are aimed at boosting both local and international participation in sporting events hosted in the state.
Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, who leads the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, echoed the governor’s sentiments. He said the current peace in Rivers was a key reason for choosing Port Harcourt as the host city for the tournament, and the smooth execution of the event confirmed the wisdom of that decision.
Organizers of the championship revealed that golfers from eight African nations and 36 golf clubs across Nigeria competed in the event, further showcasing Rivers State as a secure and vibrant destination.
