A tragic drive-by shooting occurred outside Artis Restaurant and Lounge in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, resulting in four fatalities and fourteen injuries. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. during an album release party for rapper Mello Buckzz.

As attendees were leaving the venue, a dark-colored vehicle approached the crowd and opened fire, striking eighteen individuals. The victims, aged between 21 and 32, included two men and two women who were pronounced dead at the scene. Among the injured, three were reported to be in critical condition. The shooter(s) fled immediately, and no arrests have been made.

Artis Restaurant and Lounge, a Black and LGBTQ-owned establishment, expressed deep sorrow over the violence. In a statement, the venue described the event as a painful disruption of their mission to provide a safe space for marginalized communities.

Rapper Mello Buckzz, whose real name is Melanie Doyle, was performing at the event. She expressed her grief on social media, stating, “My heart broke into so many pieces.”

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” and emphasized that it was not random. Authorities are reviewing footage and seeking public assistance to identify the suspects.

The shooting has raised concerns ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, a period historically marked by increased gun violence in Chicago. Mayor Brandon Johnson assured residents of heightened law enforcement measures and emphasized that the incident would not define the city.

This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges Chicago faces with gun violence, particularly in areas frequented by young adults and communities of color. The community continues to mourn the loss of life and hopes for swift justice for the victims.
