Former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has thrown his support behind the Peoples Democratic Party’s decision to expel Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, saying it was a necessary step to clean up the party.
Speaking at the 6th Zik’s Awards Lecture in Abuja, held to honor the legacy of Nigeria’s first president, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Aliyu described Wike’s removal as a bold move that could help the PDP regain its footing.
During the party’s recent convention in Ibadan, Wike was expelled alongside former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. Aliyu likened the action to a medical procedure, saying, “Like surgeons, we remove a cancer that has crippled the party.”
He expressed optimism that the PDP could now refocus and offer Nigerians a real alternative in future elections. “We hope that with the removal of the cancer, the party may be able to move and give Nigerians an option on what to do,” he said.
Aliyu also cautioned against the dangers of a one party system, warning that it could harm the country’s democracy. “If we make the mistake of creating a one party state in Nigeria, we will pay for it,” he said. “So, it’s good that we give an alternative to the Nigerian populace.”
His remarks reflect growing concerns about political balance and the need for strong opposition in Nigeria’s democratic space.
