As hosts Morocco and Senegal prepare to clash in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, AFP Sport recalls five of the most unforgettable AFCON title deciders in history:

Ethiopia 4–2 Egypt (1962)
The highest-scoring final in AFCON history, Ethiopia staged a thrilling comeback against defending champions Egypt. After equalising twice, the hosts netted two more goals in extra time to claim their only AFCON title. Mengistu Worku emerged as the hero, scoring the second equaliser in the dying minutes and the fourth goal in extra time before a packed crowd of 30,000 in Addis Ababa.

Congo 3–2 Mali (1972)
In Yaoundé, Congo Brazzaville overturned a halftime deficit against first-time finalists Mali. Jean-Michel M’Bono struck twice in two minutes, followed by Francois M’Pele’s goal, securing the title for Congo in just seven minutes of action around the hour mark. M’Pele was later voted the tournament’s outstanding player.

Nigeria 2–1 Zambia (1994)
Less than a year after the tragic plane crash that killed 18 Zambian players, Zambia reached the final in Tunis. Elijah Litana opened the scoring for Zambia, only for Emmanuel Amunike to equalise two minutes later and score again early in the second half, clinching Nigeria’s second AFCON title in a deeply emotional encounter.

South Africa 2–0 Tunisia (1996)
Hosts South Africa lifted the trophy in Johannesburg in front of 80,000 spectators just four years after rejoining international football post-apartheid. Substitute Mark Williams scored both goals shortly after entering the match, watched by then-President Nelson Mandela and former leader FW de Klerk.

Zambia 0–0 Ivory Coast (2012)
Zambia stunned Ivory Coast in Libreville, winning 8–7 on penalties after a goalless draw. Didier Drogba missed a regular-time penalty, while Kolo Toure and Gervinho faltered in the shoot-out. Stoppila Sunzu converted the decisive spot-kick, giving Zambia a poignant triumph near the site of the 1993 air disaster that claimed much of its national team.

These finals are remembered not only for the drama and skill on display but also for the historic and emotional significance they carried for the countries involved.
