Sudan’s humanitarian crisis has reached unprecedented levels, with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) identifying it as the gravest crisis recorded to date. Over 12 million people have been displaced since the violent clashes began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has sparked widespread famine, confirmed by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), which indicates famine conditions in ten areas and risks in 17 more. Starting January 2026, the WFP plans to reduce food rations due to severe funding shortages, potentially leaving affected communities with only 70% of their food needs met.
The health sector is also critically strained, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that more than two-thirds of hospitals in conflict-affected locations are out of operation, largely due to a lack of medical personnel and supplies. Attacks on healthcare facilities have resulted in the deaths of over 1,700 health workers and patients, with more than 400 injured. Compounding these issues is a cholera epidemic that has persisted since 2024, leading to 124,269 suspected cases and 3,355 deaths, significantly hampering healthcare efforts.
International organizations are urgently calling for increased support, with the United Nations launching a $6 billion appeal to prevent a humanitarian disaster. However, the response has been inadequate, and conditions continue to worsen. The situation demands immediate and sustained action from the global community to provide relief to millions of affected civilians and seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
