The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC Samuel Ogbuku has said that the Niger Delta region possesses the financial strength and human resources needed for growth but continues to lag behind due to lack of commitment.

Ogbuku made this known in Port Harcourt during a Niger Delta Business Roundtable organised by the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce Industry Trade and Agriculture NDCCITMA. The event focused on creating a new development agenda for the region and brought together key stakeholders to discuss practical solutions.

According to Ogbuku the region is not short of capable individuals as many indigenes excel in oil and gas banking and other sectors. However he stressed that the absence of strong commitment to regional development remains a major obstacle. He urged residents and leaders of the Niger Delta to invest in their own communities noting that local investment would attract more opportunities and generate employment.

He added that patriotism and collective responsibility are essential for transforming the region’s fortunes. Ogbuku expressed optimism that the roundtable would serve as a platform for turning ideas into actionable strategies that can drive sustainable growth.

Meanwhile Chairman of NDCCITMA Board Idare Gogo Ogan highlighted the need for a shift away from politically driven development models. He noted that despite contributing significantly to Nigeria’s economy the Niger Delta has not achieved corresponding economic progress.

Ogan emphasized the importance of prioritising security power logistics and proper project planning. He called for clear distinctions between short term projects medium term strategies and long term development goals to ensure effective and measurable progress across the region.
