China has expressed support for Iran in defending itself against United States and Israel strikes, as violence spreads across the Middle East.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Monday, emphasizing that Beijing “cherishes the traditional friendship between China and Iran” and supports Tehran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, and national dignity. Wang urged the US and Israel to immediately halt military operations to prevent further escalation and wider regional conflict, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Tehran has launched waves of missiles and drones targeting Israel, Gulf states, and a British base in Cyprus following US and Israeli strikes, which have killed hundreds since Saturday.
In a separate call with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, Wang accused the US and Israel of violating the UN charter and said China is willing to play a constructive role through the UN Security Council to uphold justice, promote peace, and stop the war.
Additionally, in a call with French Minister Jean Noel Barrot, Wang warned that unchecked military aggression risks a return to the law of the jungle, stressing that major powers cannot attack other nations based solely on military superiority. He also reiterated that the Iranian nuclear issue should ultimately be resolved through political and diplomatic channels.
So far, four US military personnel have been killed, while US President Donald Trump warned the war could last for weeks.
