Chelsea are expected to be fined by the Football Association following a heated 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday. Despite mounting a comeback after trailing by two goals at halftime, the Blues’ aggressive display raised disciplinary concerns.

The trouble began early when goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was booked for arguing with the referee after Newcastle’s opening goal by Nick Woltemade. By halftime, Chelsea had already received three yellow cards. The second half brought more of the same, with four additional bookings, including one for head coach Enzo Maresca.

According to FA rules, any team that accumulates six or more cards in a single match is subject to a £25,000 fine. However, Chelsea are likely to face a stiffer penalty. This is the second time this season they have crossed the disciplinary threshold.

During their September visit to Manchester United, five players were booked and Sanchez was sent off. Reports from the Standard suggest the FA may double the fine to £50,000.

While the financial penalty may seem minor, Chelsea’s ongoing disciplinary issues are becoming a concern. The club currently leads the Premier League in red cards this season with four, and six across all competitions. One of those was issued to Moises Caicedo, who was sent off early against Arsenal and missed three matches. Chelsea dropped points in two of those games.

Although the draw against Newcastle was a hard-earned result, the Blues will need to address their discipline if they hope to avoid further sanctions and maintain consistency in their campaign.
