Charles Godfred produced a standout performance for the University of Minnesota at the Minnesota Open, helping the Gophers secure 16 event victories and signaling a strong start to the 2026 indoor season.

The two-time Nigeria national long jump champion claimed the men’s 60m title, clocking 6.65s in the heats and improving to 6.62s in the final, surpassing his previous personal best of 6.70s. This performance places him among the top two sprinters nationally this season, behind only Farooque Aman’s 6.58s in Doha.

Godfred’s achievements highlight his versatility, excelling not only in his primary long jump discipline but also as a sprinter. His track record includes African U-20 gold in 2023, back-to-back Big Ten long jump titles in 2024 and 2025, and qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

The Gophers’ dominance was further bolstered by Hadley Streit, who threw a personal best of 22.82m in the weight throw, lifting her to third in the NCAA rankings this season and fourth on Minnesota’s all-time list.

Minnesota’s strong showing was powered by a mix of experienced athletes and unattached competitors, giving them control across multiple disciplines and establishing momentum for the 2026 indoor campaign.

Before joining Minnesota, Godfred posted a 100m time of 10.42s and a long jump of 7.86m, achievements that helped him claim continental U-20 gold and place third in the 100m at the African Golden League meeting in Abuja.
