Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has officially switched his international eligibility to Austria from England ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The decision marks a major development in the career of the young midfielder who previously represented England at several youth levels.

Chukwuemeka who currently plays for Borussia Dortmund was born in Austria but moved to England during his childhood. Despite playing for England across different youth categories he never made a senior appearance for the national team. His ce of eligibility was confirmed after an update from FIFA late on Monday.

The 22 year old midfielder will now be available to represent Austria under the management of Ralf Rangnick. Austria have qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time since 1998 and are preparing for a challenging group stage campaign.

The Austrian national team will face defending champions Argentina national football team as well as Algeria national football team and Jordan national football team during the group stage matches this summer.

Chukwuemeka could make his debut for Austria as early as the upcoming international friendlies scheduled for March where the team will face Ghana national football team and South Korea national football team.

The midfielder began his professional development at Aston Villa where he progressed through the club youth system before moving to Chelsea FC in 2022. In early 2025 he joined Borussia Dortmund on loan and the German club later completed a permanent transfer for the talented midfielder.

This season Chukwuemeka has made 20 league appearances for Dortmund and scored two goals while continuing to develop his reputation as a creative and energetic midfielder.

In a related development another young midfielder Paul Wanner also switched his international allegiance from Germany to Austria on the same day further strengthening Austria squad ahead of the global tournament.
