A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress would face a decisive loss if the 2027 general elections are conducted in a truly free and fair environment.
Lawal who is now a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today aired by Channels Television. He alleged that the current administration is working toward elishing a one party system arguing that the government would struggle to secure victory under transparent electoral conditions.
According to him internal assessments within his party support this position although he declined to disclose specific data describing it as confidential party information.
His comments come at a time of heightened tension between the ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission. The electoral body had earlier suspended recognition of a faction led by David Mark along with other groups within the party pending the outcome of an ongoing court case. INEC also announced it would not supervise the party’s congresses and national convention.
Despite this the ADC proceeded with its internal processes including a national convention which Lawal described as successful. He defended the party’s actions stating they were based on legal advice and dismissed INEC’s authority to halt their participation.
Lawal further emphasized that while the ADC has policy solutions to address Nigeria’s challenges its immediate focus is to unseat the current administration in the next election cycle.
