Prominent Nigerian leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, gathered on Sunday at the National Mosque in Abuja to attend the Janazah funeral prayers of Hajiya Umma El Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El Rufai.
Also present at the solemn event were the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, alongside other dignitaries who came to pay their last respects.
Videos shared on social media showed the arrival of key figures such as Obi and Ribadu, who exced greetings with fellow mourners before joining the congregation for the Islamic funeral rites.
In a message posted on X, Atiku Abubakar confirmed his attendance and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He prayed for comfort for the family and for the repose of the deceased, asking Allah to grant her Aljannah Firdaus.
Hajiya Umma El Rufai reportedly passed away on Friday in Cairo, Egypt, where she had been receiving treatment for an age related illness.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, including from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who joined other national figures in mourning the late matriarch.
The gathering at the mosque reflected a moment of unity among political leaders and citizens, as they came together to honor her life and legacy.
