Tech Giants Collaborate on AI Ethics: New Guidelines Proposed

In recent , leading companies have taken significant toward establishing ethical guidelines for artificial (AI) development. In May 2024, major AI firms, including Amazon, , Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, xAI, and Zhipu AI, committed to voluntary AI safety announced by the UK and South Korean governments. These involve publishing frameworks that outline how these companies will assess and risks associated with AI models. The companies agreed not to or deploy models if risks cannot be adequately mitigated. This initiative builds upon the “Bletchley Declaration” from the UK’s 2023 AI Safety Summit, to set standards for safe AI development.

In July 2023, the White House secured voluntary commitments from seven leading AI companies—Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection AI, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI—to promote the safe, secure, and transparent development of AI technology. These companies pledged to share more among themselves, governments, and researchers on managing AI risks, invest in cybersecurity, and test their AI systems through third before release to identify and address potential issues promptly. They also committed to developing tools, such as “watermarking” mechanisms, to inform users when content is AI-generated and to prioritize research on societal risks posed by AI, including bias, discrimination, and privacy concerns.

, in February 2024, eight global tech companies—GSMA, INNIT, Lenovo Group, LG AI Research, Mastercard, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Telefonica—signed an agreement to integrate the values and principles of UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI when designing and deploying AI systems. This collaboration aims to build more ethical AI by adhering to internationally recognized ethical standards.

These initiatives reflect a recognition among tech giants of the need to address ethical considerations in AI development. By voluntarily adopting these guidelines, the companies to ensure that AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly, with a focus on safety, transparency, and societal well-being.
