The Rivers State Government and the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA), led by former Minister Nyesom Wike, have disagreed over the alleged denial of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt for the group’s inauguration.

The RHA, which supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration of refusing access to the stadium, forcing the event to hold at Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic. Rivers State Coordinator Desmond Akawor, while addressing a large crowd, claimed the government’s action was politically motivated. Wike echoed the allegation, warning that future denials would be met with force.

During the event, Wike inaugurated coordinators for Rivers West, Rivers East, and Rivers South-East, praising grassroots mobilization and urging supporters to deliver votes for Tinubu in 2027. He also called on attendees to back candidates of the joint coalition in the February 2026 state constituency elections, emphasizing commitment over financial resources.

The Rivers State Government described the allegations as “false and misleading,” explaining that the Yakubu Gowon Stadium is under reconstruction and unsafe for public use. Permanent Secretary of Information Dr. Honour Sirawoo and Commissioner for Sports Christopher Green confirmed ongoing renovations, safety hazards, and the absence of any formal request for the stadium’s use. Site engineer Michael Ebitenye noted fragile underground pipes and unsafe VIP sections, warning against heavy foot traffic.

The government urged political actors to prioritize public safety and place the state’s interest above political ambitions, while affirming Governor Fubara’s commitment to Tinubu’s re-election.

The clash highlights ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, as Wike-led RHA continues to mobilize support despite logistical and administrative challenges.
