The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Chibuike Anikpe, over the alleged murder of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Ogochukwu Mmadubugwu, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that Anikpe was apprehended by operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka on January 7, 2026. The arrest comes amid rumours falsely suggesting the crime was linked to debt disputes, which police have clarified are untrue.

According to Ikenga, the suspect confessed during interrogation to stabbing Mmadubugwu in the neck on December 9, 2025. The act reportedly stemmed from Anikpe’s suspicion that his girlfriend was unfaithful. He further admitted that his significant financial investments in the relationship had left him bankrupt and emotionally distressed, which contributed to the fatal act.

The police also revealed that the suspect had attempted to mislead authorities by leaving a fake letter claiming he had been kidnapped by creditors. As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives visited the morgue where the deceased’s body was deposited to gather further evidence.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage in the community and reignited discussions around domestic violence and relationship-related crimes in Anambra State. The police urged residents to resolve disputes lawfully, seek peaceful solutions, and report early warning signs of domestic abuse to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

The suspect is expected to be charged to court following the conclusion of police investigations.
