In Los Angeles, a tragic incident has emerged involving the murder of 37-year-old June Bunyan, a Scottish immigrant who aspired to become a defense attorney. Her dream was abruptly ended when her dismembered and decomposed body was discovered in her Los Feliz apartment on September 11, 2025. Authorities arrested her husband, 25-year-old Jonathan Renteria, who now faces charges of murder and mutilation of human remains.
The investigation commenced after the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department responded to a suicide attempt call on the same day. During this inquiry, deputies found a note from Renteria admitting to killing Bunyan, prompting a welfare check at their residence where her remains were found. Prosecutors allege that the murder occurred on September 4 following a heated argument about Bunyan’s post-pregnancy weight. Renteria claimed he choked her during this confrontation after she threatened to prevent him from seeing their daughter. Subsequently, he left the apartment with the infant, later dropping her off at his parents’ home before allegedly dismembering Bunyan’s body.
Neighbors described Bunyan as friendly and outgoing, with a close friend, Arielle Miller, expressing concern over the abusive dynamics in Renteria and Bunyan’s marriage. She recounted instances of verbal abuse related to Bunyan’s weight and noted that Bunyan had confided fears for her safety. In light of this tragedy, Bunyan’s family and friends have launched a fundraising campaign to repatriate her remains to Scotland, ensuring she receives a dignified burial. Renteria remains in custody with a bail set at $4 million, and is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing in November.
