The new Netflix documentary “Devo” sheds light on the Ohio-born art-rock band known for their hit “Whip It” and eccentric image, arguing they were misunderstood and wrongly trivialized. Directed by Chris Smith, the film delves into Devo’s rich conceptual roots, combining archival footage and interviews with figures like David Bowie and Iggy Pop.
Founders Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh, who met at Kent State University during the 1970 shootings, infused the band with antiestablishment and philosophical themes, coining the concept of “de-evolution” to critique societal regression. Their music and visuals often addressed deeper issues such as conformity, violence, and capitalist excess, as seen in politically charged videos like “Beautiful World” and “Freedom of Choice.”
Despite early media misinterpretation and commercial pigeonholing, Devo’s blend of satire, visual art, and pop culture left a lasting legacy. Today, they are celebrated as pioneers of multimedia expression and influence modern acts like Rage Against the Machine.
The documentary also chronicles the band’s rise to fame, particularly after the release of their breakout hit “Whip It.” The film features rare archival footage and in-depth interviews with band members and other collaborators.
In the lead-up to the film’s release, DEVO will launch a YouTube video series titled Devolutionary Times, where they’ll upload newly restored versions of their classic music videos and films every two weeks. The series kicks off this week with their 1976 short film The Truth About De-Evolution, directed by Chuck Statler.
Later this year, DEVO will embark on their farewell “Cosmic De-Evolution Tour” alongside the B-52s. Across 11 dates, the band will play to fans in Los Angeles, Toronto, Austin, and more. DEVO will also open for My Chemical Romance at their Chicago show this August.
Formed in 1973, DEVO gained major-label attention with their debut album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, produced with support from David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Their 1980 smash hit “Whip It” peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a staple in MTV history, cementing DEVO’s place in pop culture.
The documentary “Devo” is set to premiere on Netflix on August 19, 2025, offering an in-depth look at the band’s misunderstood legacy and their impact on music and culture.
