Drescher’s re-election comes at a pivotal time for the entertainment industry, which is grappling with significant challenges. The union’s recent strike against major video publishers, initiated in July 2024, concluded in July 2025 after members ratified a new agreement. The strike was precipitated by concerns over AI’s role in the gaming industry, particularly regarding the potential for AI to replace human performers. SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge against Llama Productions, a subsidiary of Epic Games, for using AI to recreate Darth Vader’s voice in “Fortnite” without union consultation.

These underscore the broader industry challenges, including the economic impact of the 2023 dual by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA. The strikes to significant financial losses and job cuts, with Southern California alone suffering a $6.5 billion economic hit and approximately 45,000 jobs disappearing.
