Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has disclosed that the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has received proposals for amendments in approximately 161 areas.

Kalu, who also serves as Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, made this announcement during an interview with journalists following a presentation at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) meeting in Abuja. He was accompanied by principal officers of the House.

Calling the meeting with the governors “productive,” Kalu emphasized the critical role of state governors in advancing the ongoing constitutional review process. He noted that engaging the governors is essential to avoid delays and ensure progress in achieving the proposed amendments.

“We informed them that we are going to be visiting their states and the geopolitical zones to advance the opinions of the public in their various zones with regards to the thematic areas of the constitution that we are looking at,” Kalu stated.

He revealed that the committee had received proposals covering 161 areas for potential amendments and assured that detailed breakdowns of these proposals would be shared during upcoming engagements.

The deputy speaker underscored the importance of continued collaboration with governors, particularly to incorporate their input into the constitutional review process.

To streamline communication and ensure efficiency, the committee also requested governors to nominate an anchor person or state liaison officer. This representative would act as a link between the state and the committee, facilitating the exchange of inputs and feedback.

Kalu’s remarks highlight the committee’s commitment to a comprehensive review of the constitution, reflecting diverse public opinions and addressing the needs of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
