The Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the District Court in Atlanta, Georgia, following a three-year investigation into allegations of business fraud. The court’s ruling, which came after investigations by multiple U.S. agencies and a series of legal proceedings, concluded that no financial losses were incurred by any banks, exonerating Onyema of all charges.

The case, brought forward by the Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, also involved a former staff member of Springfield Aviation Company Inc., Ebony Mayfield, who faced legal action in connection with the indictment. Last Friday, the court sentenced Mayfield to probation and a $4,000 fine after she pleaded guilty to one count related to the misuse of Letters of Credit for purchasing aircraft for Air Peace Limited.

According to a statement released by Onyema’s legal counsel, the law firm Augustine Alegeh & Co., Mayfield was an administrative staff member with limited understanding of the complex Letter of Credit transactions used to facilitate the aircraft purchases. The law firm highlighted that probation is the lightest possible sentence under U.S. Federal Law, indicating the minimal severity of the offense.

The legal team further emphasized that all funds involved in the transactions were legitimate and belonged to Air Peace. They reiterated that the aircraft purchased through the Letters of Credit were brought into Nigeria and used for the airline’s operations, with no criminal intent or losses to any party. “There was no victim. There was no loss of funds to any person, and there was no criminal intent whatsoever,” the firm stated.

The case attracted significant attention in Nigeria, where false reports circulated about Onyema’s alleged involvement in fraudulent activities. The law firm addressed these misconceptions, clarifying that both U.S. and Nigerian law enforcement agencies found no evidence of criminality in Onyema’s actions.

With the court’s ruling, Onyema’s legal team reaffirmed their client’s innocence and expressed relief that the matter has been resolved. The CEO of Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s leading airlines, can now continue his work without the shadow of legal challenges that have followed him for the past three years.
