Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command arrested 27-year-old Imole Ajayi on Thursday, accusing him of armed robbery in the Agbara area of the state. The arrest took place around 8:30 pm during a police stop-and-search operation on Orita/Idi-Oke Road in Igbesa, located within the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.
Ajayi, who resides in Area 5, Iperin OPIC Estate, is believed to be a member of a “one-chance” armed robbery gang. The group allegedly uses motorcycles to target stranded motorists, searching for vulnerable individuals who may be in distress on the road.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the suspect was apprehended while attempting to conceal a bag during the police patrol. When officers searched the bag, they discovered a single-barrel shotgun along with three live cartridges. Ajayi was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for possessing the weapon.
In a statement released to journalists on Friday, Odutola detailed the incident, saying, “On October 17, 2024, at approximately 8:30 pm, the police apprehended a suspected armed robber during a stop-and-search operation on Orita/Idi-Oke Road. Imole Ajayi, a 27-year-old male from Area 5, Iperin OPIC Estate, attempted to hide a bag while riding his motorcycle and pretended not to know its contents.”
Odutola added that the police suspect Ajayi’s involvement in a gang that scouts for stranded vehicles, targeting both commercial and private car owners in distress. The arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the Ogun State Police Command to curb criminal activities in the area and ensure the safety of residents.
Ajayi is currently in police custody, and further investigations are underway to determine the extent of his involvement in the robbery activities within the state.
