The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on Ndigbo to be deliberate and strategic with their votes ahead of the 2027 general election, stressing the need to invest politically for long-term benefits.
Kalu made the appeal during a New Year visit to an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Senator Chris Adighije, in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State. The visit, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, was part of engagements aimed at strengthening political alignment in the South-East.
The Deputy Speaker urged the Igbo people to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, noting that loyalty in politics often yields dividends. He described votes as a form of political investment that determines access to democratic benefits.
“It’s about time we started investing our votes and not wasting our votes. This is Operation Invest Your Votes, Don’t Waste Your Votes,” Kalu said. He added that votes serve as the “currency” through which citizens buy dividends in a democracy, stressing that the number of votes cast directly influences the level of political returns.
Kalu advised Ndigbo to align with the southern political bloc, arguing that President Tinubu currently represents the most viable platform within that corridor. He cautioned against internal divisions and called for unity and cooperation with the South-West, saying such alliances would be crucial when it becomes the South-East’s turn to seek national leadership.
“Let us have a handshake today, so that tomorrow they will return it,” he stated, urging early political positioning before it becomes too late.
In his response, Senator Adighije welcomed the message and admitted that past political decisions had been costly. He expressed gratitude for the visit and pledged support, noting that the message of goodwill from President Tinubu had resonated across Olokoro and the wider Umuahia South area.
The visit ended with renewed calls for unity, strategic voting, and long-term political planning ahead of the 2027 polls.
