In a significant operation conducted by the Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), 40-year-old Kasimu Abubakar was arrested in Shinkafi town for possessing 70 pieces of concealed Indian hemp. The arrest, which took place following intelligence received from Lagos State about a drug consignment being transported to Shinkafi, was detailed during a press briefing on Monday at the NSCDC headquarters in Gusau, the state capital.

Commandant Sani Mustapha, represented by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASCII Umar Mohammed, revealed that the suspect attempted to bribe NSCDC personnel with a sum of N1 million to secure his release. This bribe was firmly rejected by the officers involved.

Mustapha explained, “On getting the information, our personnel swung into action and apprehended the suspect. We discovered 70 pieces of cannabis worth N1.7 million.” The Commandant further noted that two other individuals, believed to be business partners of Abubakar, remain at large, indicating that the investigation is still ongoing to capture all those involved in this drug trafficking network.

This incident underscores the ongoing efforts of the NSCDC in Zamfara State to combat drug trafficking, a significant issue in the region often linked to broader criminal activities. The seizure of such a substantial amount of cannabis not only disrupts the supply chain but also sends a clear message about the NSCDC’s commitment to law enforcement, especially when faced with attempts at corruption.

The arrest highlights the importance of inter-state cooperation in tackling drug-related crimes, as the tip-off came from Lagos, demonstrating the necessity of a coordinated national approach to security challenges. The NSCDC’s vigilance and integrity in rejecting the bribe are commendable, emphasizing the agency’s dedication to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens.
