The Zamfara State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Aisha M. Z. Anka, has announced a significant milestone for the state: one year without any reported cases of the polio virus. Dr. Anka made this announcement during a one-day town hall meeting held in Gusau, focused on the upcoming Integration Measles Vaccination Campaign.
Highlighting the success, Dr. Anka attributed the achievement to the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved in routine immunization activities. She expressed gratitude to international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, GAVI, and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for their continued support. She acknowledged that without their contributions, Zamfara State would not have been able to reach this significant milestone.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Malam Bashir Surajo Gusau, Dr. Anka also outlined the State government’s future plans. She stated that the administration is committed to intensifying its efforts to eradicate both polio and measles. The goal is to reduce the prevalence of these diseases by 60 percent by the end of 2025, demonstrating the state’s dedication to improving public health and ensuring a safer future for its residents.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the government, healthcare organizations, and the community. She urged all stakeholders to participate actively in the upcoming measles vaccination campaign to ensure its success and to protect children from preventable diseases.
Dr. Anka’s remarks highlight the significant progress Zamfara State has made in disease prevention through the power of partnerships and comprehensive immunization programs. As the state prepares for the measles vaccination campaign, the focus remains on sustaining the momentum achieved and continuing to improve the health outcomes for its citizens.
