Ivory Coast has unexpectedly recalled 33-year-old winger Wilfried Zaha for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Currently playing for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer, Zaha has not represented his national team since 2022. Coach Emerse Fae noted that strengthening the team’s attack was a primary goal, emphasizing Zaha’s experience and dribbling skills as significant factors in his selection.
Additionally, 34-year-old midfielder Jean-Michael Seri has been brought back into the squad following recovery from a long-term injury, with his last appearance dating back to October 2024. However, the team will be without forward Simon Adingra, a crucial player in their 2023 Cup of Nations victory; his lack of playing time at Sunderland contributed to his exclusion. Also missing from the squad are attacker Nicolas Pépé and defender Wilfried Singo, who is sidelined due to injury.
As defending champions, Ivory Coast is set to commence their title defense on December 24 in Marrakech, where they will face Mozambique in their opening Group F match, alongside competitors Cameroon and Gabon.
The 26-man squad showcases a blend of seasoned players and emerging talent, featuring goalkeepers from Rizespor, Charleroi, and Panathinaikos, defenders from Nottingham Forest, Sporting Lisbon, and Roma, midfielders from Stade Rennais and Al Ahli, and forwards from clubs like Manchester United and RB Leipzig. This strategic selection aims to balance experience with youth as the team prepares to secure another continental title in Morocco.
