Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has urged Nigerians to remember the sacrifices of fallen members of the Armed Forces, saying their selflessness remains the foundation of peace and unity in the country.

Speaking on Thursday at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Government House Event Centre in Damaturu, Buni emphasized that the occasion was meant to honor patriots who gave their lives in the defence of the nation.

“It is a known fact that the patriots we are gathered here to honour sacrificed their lives to resolve conflicts and ensure peace in our communities, our state and our country,” he said.

The governor recalled Yobe State’s experience as the second epicentre of the Boko Haram insurgency, noting that the event venue was once under insurgent control. He highlighted that the relative peace enjoyed today is a result of community cooperation, local intelligence, and the gallantry of security agencies.

Buni called on residents to continue supporting security personnel, stressing that “security is everybody’s business” and that sustained peace requires collective responsibility, including sharing information with law enforcement. He also urged citizens to pray for the repose of fallen heroes and for improved security across Yobe State, the North-East, and Nigeria at large.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Yobe State chapter, Goji Birma, commended the state government for its support for ex-servicemen and their families, while noting that funding remains a major challenge. He explained that the legion, which has over 400 members, relies primarily on emblem sales and donations to run quarterly welfare and vocational programs for veterans, widows, and orphans.

The ceremony featured interfaith prayers and the symbolic release of white pigeons, serving as a tribute to fallen heroes and a call for peace, unity, and continued support for members of the Armed Forces and their families.
