Students of Civil Engineering at Yaba College of Technology recently experienced hands on engineering practice during an educational visit to the Metro Smart City project in Lekki.

The field trip organised by geotechnical engineering lecturer Omolola Adetona exposed students to real world applications of concepts previously learned only in classrooms. The initiative was driven by concerns that many young engineers lack practical experience required for the evolving demands of the profession.

Speaking during the visit Dr Adetona emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between theory and practice noting that engineering education must extend beyond lectures to real life environments where students can see how concepts are applied.

The students toured the expansive Metro Smart City development by Metrospeed Group a 97 hectare lagoon front project featuring advanced infrastructure such as fibre optics solar energy systems central water supply rainwater harvesting and modern high rise structures.

Head of Sales and Marketing at Metrospeed Emike Ntiokiet described the initiative as part of the company’s commitment to capacity building and innovation in Nigeria’s real estate sector. She urged students to think beyond traditional construction approaches highlighting the growing need for smart infrastructure to address urban expansion and housing challenges.

At the project site engineer Abdulhameed Salahudeen reinforced the importance of regular industry exposure recommending that students undertake multiple site visits each semester to strengthen their understanding.

For many students including Afolami Omotosho the experience was both inspiring and enlightening demonstrating that world class engineering projects are achievable within Nigeria.

The visit underscores the growing push to integrate practical training into academic programmes ensuring that future engineers are better prepared to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
