Social media platform X has recently launched audio and video calling features, a significant enhancement aimed at improving user interaction. This development is part of X’s vision to become an “everything app” by integrating a variety of communication tools within its ecosystem.

These new calling functionalities are available to all users, regardless of subscription status. To make a call, users can open a direct message with another individual and select the phone icon in the top right corner, where they can choose between audio or video options. The features are compatible with iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, eliminating the need for a phone number.

Users can customize their calling preferences in the “Direct messages” settings, allowing calls from contacts in their address book, those they follow, verified users, or all users. An “Enhanced call privacy” feature also ensures that users’ IP addresses remain concealed during calls for better security.

This new initiative positions X to compete directly with established messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram, which have already offered similar capabilities. By incorporating these features, X seeks to provide a comprehensive communication solution, potentially reducing the need for users to rely on multiple applications for various functions.

The introduction of audio and video calls is part of X’s broader strategy to diversify its offerings and boost user engagement. As the platform evolves, the integration of these features is anticipated to significantly reshape social media interactions and enhance the overall user experience.
