The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Professor Biodun Jeyifo, describing him as a valued partner in its mission to strengthen media excellence and public accountability.

In a statement released on Wednesday, signed by WSCIJ Executive Director and CEO Motunrayo Alaka, the centre highlighted Jeyifo’s immense contributions to the pursuit of truth and the interrogation of power in society. Jeyifo, who passed away recently at the age of 80, was celebrated for his intellectual rigor, mentorship, and dedication to culture, education, and social justice.

“Jeyifo’s influence was felt in lecture halls, through his writings, and in his mentorship of students and younger scholars, many of whom have gone on to become leading academics, journalists, cultural critics, and public intellectuals around the world,” the statement read.

He delivered keynote addresses at the WSCIJ Media Lecture Series in 2013 and 2024, addressing pressing issues such as the Freedom of Information Act, corruption, and the challenges of truth in journalism. Jeyifo also served as the first President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and held professorships at Cornell and Harvard Universities. His global recognition as an authority on African literature and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka was noted by the centre.

The WSCIJ recalled Jeyifo’s 80th birthday symposium on January 5, 2026, which explored themes central to his scholarship, including knowledge, power, education, culture, and liberation. “His life was of relentless inquiry, compassionate teaching, and fearless intellectual engagement. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to guide future generations in the pursuit of truth, justice, and humane scholarship,” Alaka said.

The centre extended sympathies to his family, students, colleagues, and admirers worldwide.
